**An online promotion can be good news for sales and a busy afternoon for the systems behind them. [Restate 1.7, released on 7 July 2026](https://restate.dev/blog/announcing-restate-1-7), introduced Flow Control: a way to limit how much integration work runs at once while the rest waits in a queue.

Restate coordinates multi-step processes and records their progress so work can recover after interruptions. Flow Control adds another part of that reliability story: not sending more work than the next service can handle at once**.

## [A queue can be the sensible outcome](#a-queue-can-be-the-sensible-outcome)

Imagine several Shopify brands sharing an integration service that sends orders to an ERP. One brand’s promotion creates a sudden burst of work. Letting everything run at once can overload that service; making some work wait can be the better choice.

The new controls, backed by what Restate calls Virtual Queues, let builders set limits for groups of work and smaller groups within them. For example, one brand can have its own limit within a shared overall limit. Those rules must be configured for the workload; they do not automatically make every brand’s traffic fair.

There is an important distinction: **concurrency is how much runs at once**, not how many requests a system allows per minute. The 1.7 launch provided concurrency limits. Rate limits and additional event-priority controls were described as future work, so a system with a per-minute allowance may still need separate protection.

## [What it means for you](#what-it-means-for-you)

If your integrations run on Restate, this is relevant when busy periods create backlogs or one workload puts pressure on another. It does not increase the capacity of your ERP or warehouse system. Work still has to wait when demand exceeds capacity, and someone needs visibility into **how long it is waiting and why**.

At launch, the new scheduler was opt-in and required a fresh Restate cluster, with migration support planned. Those are release-specific conditions, not a reason to assume your environment needs rebuilding now. Check the supported upgrade path for the version and hosting arrangement you actually use.

The useful operational question is whether a busy period leaves a visible, manageable queue or a trail of failed requests. Raise that at your next integration support review. If we support your flows, our [Inite Care Plans](/pricing) set out the ongoing support scope.
